Kitchen music – what’s yours?

We all like a bit of music in the kitchen – it helps the food you are preparing to taste better. It’s true – try playing some Ravi Shankar next time you’re making a curry and you’ll see what I mean.

Generally though in the evenings I’ve got the radio on. Usually one of the indie channels like WFMU, BBC 6Music or maybe XFM. If I’m in a bad mood I’ll stick on Classic FM and chill out to some classical music. Although this can be a dangerous option ‘cos if they’re playing opera it really winds me up for some reason.

I also have my favourite washing up music – music to wash the dishes to generally needs to be mid-paced and lyrically absorbing.  Anything by Tom Waits will do really – with the added hilarious irony that while he sings his tales of the wilder shores  of human experience, there’s you washing plates. Priceless.

Hip hop and heavy metal generally aren’t great kitchen music – I find both of these better suited to other tasks and pastimes such as skiing, running, and when there’s no other option, cleaning the windows.

Kitchen music and dining music are of course two distinct entities – for dining you need something a bit different like Erik Satie or maybe some Acid Jazz .

Cool Bodum toaster, I like!

Toast is of course a student staple, but even when we mature into grownups with a proper diet, toast is still a breakfast essential, and also handy for pâté, cheeseboard and as a platform for many other culinary delights.

For good toast though you need a toaster. For why? because a toaster applies equal heat either side of the slice. That’s why toast made under the grill is always concave. This Bodum toaster does the trick, and consigns grilled toast to the breadbin of history. It also looks the part.
